Sadly Tim Krings’ newest attempt at Heroes (the Reborn verse) did not pull in enough viewers, or interest, to keep the series on air after its first season. On Thursday, the show’s finale sailed off after the HELE, which Tommy, Noah and Malina stopped,leaving behind a “tantalizing” clue as to who the twins’ father was and that he was returning.
Sidenote: It is pretty obvious that the clues left at the end of the show meant that Sylar must be the kids’ father. Or…Nathan Petrelli…Or…the show could have been alluding to the “honorary” dad, Hiro Nakamura. Of course all this conjecture is now moot, as the show has been cancelled.
Tommy is trapped by Erica and he powers the time machine transporting all who wear the watches 7K years (plus) into the future. Inside of Evernow after Otomo placed him there, the boy remembers that he can be in two places at once.
Back in the past, Quentin, Malina and Luke face the first blast of the HELE and Collins sacrifices himself to allow Malina the chance to stop the second blast.
In the future part of the finale there is a long expository bit where Tommy has to remember his own memories in order to escape Evernow.
These memories explain just how he and his sister will be able to save the world, although it does take a long time “round the barn” to let the viewer in on the whole thing. A third person is needed, when the two combine their powers, someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves.
Back in the past Quentin and Malina move inside the Odessa clock tower were an angry Phoebe tries to kill the savior of the world. Poor Quentin ends up killing his sister to save Malina. It seems that it was preordained that Frady would end up doing this, a bitter twist to his tale of brotherly love.
In the future, Ren and Emily release Hachiro and the real Miko Otomo. Ren is overjoyed to find Katana Girl again, but she does not know Shimosawa. Erica’s toady, Schwenkman shows up with a gun, but Hachiro kills him. After explaining to Ren that he must save Tommy, and that he is the only player of Evernow who can. the young man is sent into the game where he is once again reunited with Katana Girl.
The game is dying, as is Katana Girl, but the two fight their way to where Tommy is being held. As Ren unlocks the door, more exposition in the form of memories are presented and once Shimosawa opens the door, he leaves the game. Before going, Katana Girl tells him that she has a feeling they will meet again.
Tommy, who now knows that he can be in two places at once, has a very short stand off with the villainous Erica, which of course he wins as he can be in two places at the same time. Freezing time, he frees the innocent and sets Kravid up for death.
Back in the past, a prolonged attempt to save the world takes place. Tommy has to remember more memories and then retrieves Noah who must sacrifice himself for the twins’ power to work.
Cue the solar flare being defeated via a “Fifth Element” style blast from Noah, as the crucial part of the twin’s defense.
After the event, Quentin Frady is in custody and being question by two “men in black.” The evos have moved on and both Tommy and Malina get what appear to be Taro calling cards from their real father.
Sadly, this tantalizing clue to what would have lay in store for a non existent season two, will never happen and this attempt to regenerate the Heroes verse ends with the finale of Project Reborn.
There were nice touches in the last episode, Tommy referencing Hiro’s “smallest butterfly” schtick, a glimpse of Ren and the “real” Katana Girl practicing Kendo while Hachiro Otomo looks on smiling. Not to mention the long overdue death of Erica Kravid. Perhaps Tim Kring can revisit the Heroes verse after another long hiatus. A new title could be Heroes Re-Reborn…
